DESTRUCTIVE FIRE AT HAWERA
By Telegraph.—Press Association. Hawera, July 2. A few minutes before S o'clock 'this morning a tiro was discovered hi the back of tho premises of Tait (chemist) and Taylor (draper), in High Street. The brigade motor was soon on the spot and found tho lire had a strong hold, and, the buildings being old, it spread very quickly. Dospito the splendid pressure of water and tho absence of wind, Tait's and Taylor's shops wero gutted, as w;ll as Cataran's (confectioner) adjoining. Crystal's tobacconist s shop was badly damaged, and the top story over Cataran's and Cryfitall's, used as a I'-eil Cross depot, was completely The buildings alt belonged to ihc Sutton Estate, and wero insured for -ilOflO in the Standard Office. Tait's stock and fittings wero insured for .£SOO in the Norwich Union; Taylor's for .£'170(1 in the Phoenix; Cataran's for £.115 in tho Standard; and the Red. Cross depot for ,£6O in the Pboeni?. Crystall's insurance is not inown.
The 'fire was under control in threcr|iiarters of an hour, but much damage was done, and Tait. Catnmn, and the lied Cross are heavy losors.
