ACTIVITY ON RUAPEHU
SMOKE AND STEAM SEEN.
Smoko and steam were seen to bo issuing from Mount Ruapolui on Saturday morning, says the Ohaluinc correspondout of the Auckland "Herald." People at Waiouru saw smoke arising in tho early hours, wliilo from Ohakime a volume of steam was observed. The position where tho steam was rising is north of the Matterhorn, nearly half-way between thero and the centre of the mountain, and thoSo who know the topography of the vicinity aire of opinion that it is from the. hot lake at ihe lon. Ruapehu is at present wearing its mid-winter mantle of snow, and is very heavily coated down to the snow line.
