WAR CONTINGENT ASSOCIATION

ITS WORK IN ENGLAND,

At the meeting of the Advisory Board held in Christchurch on ..Tune 2ft, tho chairman read a letter from Mr. Vaniev speaking highly of the work of the "War Contingent Association, London. He pointed out tluit when he left England the War Contingent Association was in charge of the following clubs and hostels:—(l) New Zealand Soldiers' Club, Russell Square (200 beds); (2) clubroom, Southampton Row; (3) hutment. Hornchurch; (4) hutment, Walton-on-Thamcs; (5) hutment, Oatlands; (6) hutment, in tho village of Brockenhurst; (7) clubroom in Salisbury; (8) clubroom in Boscoinbo; (9) hutment at Codford; (10) clubroom in Torquay.

In addition to looking after the men in the clubs and hostels, it is pointed out that the War Contingent Association has been doing excellent work in looking after the sick and wounded in the hospitals—latterly acting as agents for the New Zealand Red Cross. Arrangements are now being made in England whereby the New Zealand Red Cross takes over the looking after the sick, wounded, and convalescent, and the War Contingent Association will look after the well men on furlough in London, and will 'also look after the clubs and canteens which are under that association for the benefit of well men in the different camps. The soldiers and civilians who have lately returned from England cannot: speak (on highly of tho work that the New Zealanders have done in London for our soldiers.

It was mentioned at the Advisory Hoard meeting that the War Contingent Association will be wanting considerable funds in order to enable that association to run the different clubs and hostels and look after our well men 011 leave in London. The Hon. .1. T. Paul. M.L.C., Mr. T,. 0. H. Tripp. Air. V. .T. Larner, and Mr. .T. J. Tlongail. memb?rs of the Advisory Board Committee, were set up as a sub-committee (0 cable to England to find out exactly what is wanted for the War Contingent Association. When this has been ascertained, the different: districts will be asked to contribute their quota.
