NEW SOLDIERS' CEMETERY

THE FIRST INTERMENT. Quito recently the Wellington City Council dedicated a special reserve of land ill tho Karori Cemetery, on tho high ground to the east of the main roaxl between tho main entrance and the church,,as a cemetery for tho interment of soldiers who may die in Wellington whilst still attached to the forces. This piece ■of ground, which is admirably chosen, will also be thp site of a soldiers' memorial to be erected at somo i'uturj date, as a lasting monument to those brave men who have given up their lives for their country. For that especial purpose, a piece of ground, thirty feet square, lias been reserved on the highest elevation of the soldiers' cemetery.

The first .interment in the new burial ground will tako place to-day, when the remains of 11/1591, Trooper Hobert Duiiiface Bidtlell, of the Wellington Mounted Rifles, who died in the Victoria (Soldiers') Hospital 011 Sunday, will be interred. The late Trooper jßiddell, who was engaged in farming work in tlia 'Wiuigauui district, before he enlisted, returned to New Zealand in February last, suffering from a gunshot wound in the hand, a fractured skull, and destroyed brain substance. He' was a single man, 30 years of age, and was tho son of Mrs. Ellen ltiddoll, of Stratliavon, Lanairilishirc, Scotland. The funeral to-day will bo a military one.
