COMMERCIAL MEN DISCUSS REDUCTIONS

ANOMALIES POINTED OUT

The new Postal and Telegraph rules, ■which eamo into operation yesterday, were discussed at a me-jtins' of the council of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce in the afternoon. The members took no execution to the reduction in (ho letter deliveries and letter-box clearances, but_ they voiced protests against some of {he'oilier alterations. Members of the council considered that tho closing of mails three hours boforo tho departure of trains and ctcamors would inflict unnecessary iiiconvanienca on Iho public, and they pointed out eomo of tho anomalies that -would arise. Tho nail fur the north-bound express now closes at-10 a.m. The rules provide that the rccislcrcd mail shall closo an hour in advanco of tho ordinary mail, and it nppears, therefore, that registered letters must bo posted by 9 a.m., the hour at .which tho office opens. Tho New Plymouth mail, which reaches Wellington in the evening, is jiot sorted into tho boxes until shortly before 8 p.m. The mail for dispatch tho iiext morning closes at 8 p.m., so that it is impossible for a. reply *to be sent f'by return."

The council decided to mako representations to tho Postal authorities on fcliesn and other points.
