WAR RELIEF
WELLINGTON ASSOCIATION. MEETS. A meeting of the Executive Committee of tho War Belief Association of. Wellington was held yesterday. Mr. L. G. H. Tripp presided. . Tho secretary submitted the following statement of total funds at May 81:—Investments, J!W,015; current accounts, ,£719; cash in hand, ,£2O; total, i 71,755. The income for tho month of May was said to bo .£632, and the expenditure •JS7U. - * . , Tho Relief Committee reported that since last meeting executive had dealt with 295 applications. _ Notwithstanding tho increased marriage and children's allowances payable sinco January 1 and Majr 1 respectively, the total number of claims received by tho association during tho,first six months of. this year shows a reduction, as compared with the similar period of 1917, of only 5 per cent.; but owing, perhaps, to tho large number of returned men _ now in the Dominion, many of tho claims now received emannto from intending soldiersettlers and men desirous of establishing themselves in commercial'pursuits in the city, and the amount of work devolving up'ou tho staff hiis, as a result, increased very largely, Tho association is now deal- j ing with a greater amount of correspondence, created by inquiries from all over tho Dominion and from Australia for information relating to every aspect of the soldier's welfare and that of his dependants, than is occasioned by the applications made to it for direct financial assistance: Tho report was •adopted.
