CITY APPEALS BIG LIST HEARD YESTERDAY The Second Military Sctfvico Board snt again yesterday. Over forty appeals were k on the list. The chairman of the board t is Mr. J. W. Foyntan. (The military representative 0 is Captain Beale. k City Corporation Electricians.' r The City Corporation authorities asks cd the board to exempt Alfred Willcox 1 and Robert W. Lachlan, engineers in the e City Electric Lighting Department. i The City Engineer (Mr. W. H. MorB ton) said that these engineers could not ■ be replaced. A stage had been reached c when the department could not carry on • satisfactorily if any more such men wero J taken. Warburton and Horace 3 [ Duddmg, plumbers, Lower Hutt, were . appealed for by the Lower Hutt Borough . Council whose engineer said that only , three plumbers were left in the borough, ' ™~^.-would be a serious thing for the Hutt .if even ono of them were snt away Drainage, etc., could not be neglected without imperilling the health of the community. . If wo did so our enemies might do considerable damage with fires. The case was adjourned sine die. \ A Bank's Fine Record. - Oswald K. Tennant, bank accountant, ivas appealed for by the Bank of Australasia. It was stated that though the bank had suffered serious depletion of staff, this was the only appeal it had made. The chairman: That is a splendid record. Captain Beale: In view of the record I do not propose to raise any objection to the appeal. Ttib case was adjourned sine die. W. G. Johnston's Case, At Tuesday's sitting of tho board tho military representative stated th.it sit appellant, Walter G. Johnston (ivho did no', appear), had puit tho military to much troub|e and had failed to atiiist. Ytsteiday Major A. A. Cornzim attended the board sitting and said that Johnston had been misrepresented when it had been said that he failed to fittest when, ordered to do so. Thnre had boon no failure on Johnston's part, but a mistake had been made by a new attesting oftcer. Captaini Beale said that the fact remained that Johnston was givon notice to attend and did not obey the order. Therefore he was to blame. He understood for a long time Johnston's conduct had been unsatisfactory. Major- Corrigan said that he was not present to defend Johnston, but to explain (for tho Department) that ,i mistake had been made. Tho chairman of the hoard (Mr. .T. W. . Poynton, S.M.) said that Johnston should have attended before the board. , Other' Cases. George Francis Guise, bootmaker, appealed on tho ground that he made footwear for cripples. His ca3e adjourned sine die. John Griffiths, Customhouse agent, was appealed for by his father for business : reasons. The appeal was adjourned till i September, when it is liable to bo reopened, i Charles F. Smythe, puller and wool classer, was appealed for by his employers, and the case was adjourned till Sep- : tember. ' ' An appeal by Frederick J. Hale, mechanic, Petono, was adjourned till the i next session of the board in Wellington.. i An appeal for Joseph Peters, B Coy., Thirty-eighth Reinforcements, was dismissed. Harold R. Cooper, solicitor, Falmerston North, appealed. It was stated that ' all his clerks and his partner had enlist- , ed. Decision was reserved till to-day. ] An adjournment sine die was made in l the case of L. E. Wcblcy, pattern-maker, ' Lower Hutt. ' Herbert W. H. Haines, dairy farmer, l had Ins appeal adjourned sine die. Frederick L. S. Turnbull, clerk, Mira- ' mar, was granted leave till October. A. J. Rigg, manager, had an appeal ad- < journed sine die. J. N. Duncan, commercial.traveller, is l to be recommended for non-combatant j work, but his appeal was dismissed. ' Leave till September 11 was allowed R. J* P.
