I The fortnightly meeting of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals ,was held last evening, Mr. F. Meadowcroft presiding. A letter was read from a resident in Motueka asking for iniormation re starting a branch of the society in that pari of Nelson district. It was resolved that a letter be sent fivinfull information, and slating, inter alia, that the society's inspector had power to lake action under the Police Offences Act in the districts of Marlborough and Nelson, but owing to the expense and the- state of the society's finances, it was unable to send Jiim over to tho South Island. The inspector reported that he bad dealt with one case of cruelly to fowls, three cases of lame horses, six horses off work for various reasons, and one case of ill-treating dogs. Re. also drew attention to horses being lamed frdm picking up nails in their feet owing to . thoughtless people throwing or sweeping them on to the roadway. The subscriptions amounted to M liis., including head office staff,, Loan and Mercantile, £1 4si Gd.; Messrs. J. Campbell, and G. Fowlds, XI Is. each; and Dr. Ewart and Mv,\ J. .Tripe, 10s. Gd. each.
