NEW ZEALAND CLUB
ANNUAL MEETING OF MEMBERS. The annual meeting of the New Zealand Club was held last evening, Mr. Charles E. Wheeler presiding. The annual report stated that tho activities of the club had heen again seriously curtailed by the'war, and tho diflicultics were more serious than during the 1 previous year. Four luncheons were, held in the course of the year. These were-.-May 2(1, 1(1171 To Mr. C. J. Parr, , C.M.G., M.P., who dealt with the visit of Parliamentary delegates to' the Western front; June 12, 1917: To Sir Henry Richards, Chief Justice'of the Province's of Agra and Oude, whose address dealt with the attitude of Indian leaders towards Imperial federation; July 17, , 1917: To the Right Hon. W. P. Mnssey (Prime Minister), and Sir Joseph Ward (Minister of Finance), upon their return from the Imperial War Cabinet meeting? January 29, 1918: To Dr. G. E. Morrison, Political Adviser to the Chinese Republic, who spoke on the development of the political institutions in the Republic. Tl|£ membership totalled 252. Four members resigned during the year, and the committee regretted to record the deaths of Dr. Martin, Mr. S. A. Atkin-' .! son (killed in action), and Mr. G. H. 'j Fell (killed in action), The late secre- ;.: tary • Corporal G. 0. Sutton, was on active ': service with Ihe New Zealand Army Pay J Corps, and Mr. Wheeler, the club presi- "": mt, had to go into camp early in SepI' t.nber. "Negotiations are in progress /ith the Y.M.C.A.," concluded tho reI 'port, "in the hope of renewing the < atering arrangements of former years. If this can be done, the club will be enabled to continue its activities, despite the difficulties of the times.' It is so valuable a factor in the intellectual life of the business community that the'eommitte is of opinion that it should bo maintained even under exceptionally unfavourable conditions." t The report and financial .statement were adopted. It was decided to resume the collection of the annual subscription from members for the ensuing year. On the motion of Mr. W. E. Spencer the following resolution was carried by. acclamation:—"That this meeting of the New Zealand Club place on record its high appreciation of the ability and zeal displayed by Mr. C. E. Wheeler, in furthering the interests of the club during his two years of presidency at a most trying time in its history, and on his being called up to serve the Empire at the front wishes him God-speed and a safe return." y\r. E. W. Kellow moved, and Mr. C. S. Falconer seconded, a vote of thanks to the officers and committee far the work carried out during the year. The following officers were elected:— President, Mr/ W. GENERAL SMITH-DORRIEN APPOINTED GOVERNOR OP GIBRALTAR. London, June 23. It-is reported that General Sir H. Ij, Smith-Don ien has been appointed Governor of Gibraltar—Aus.-N.Z. Cable, Assn: [General Sir Horace Lockwooil SmithDorrien was in command of the 2ml Army of the, British Expeditionary Force in MM and 1915; and then took command of the East African litoce in 191.V1G. Ho retired from that position owing to ill health.]
