200 MILES ACROSS HOSTILE - COUNTRY.

London, Juno 21 Private Badcock, the Tasmanian soldier who escaped from the German war prison al: Cassel, had Gill, n Seaforlh . Liffhlander, as a comrade .'n his escape. Jadcock was wounded at Pozieres in • JIG! and had been working since then at Cassel. lie and Gill belonged to a party, of eight prisoners working in a private, garden, the sentry being an old civilian gardener. Badcoclc and Gill purloined a map of Westphalia, bought a compass, and secured a supply of civilian clothes. When the sentry was at lunch on May 7 Badcock picked up a cpade and Gill shouldered a sack of provisions, and they walked oft'. They traversed Cassel t'roin south to north, passing unchallenged. They hid in a neighbouring wood till nightfall, and -afterwards travelled for fifteen nights, hiding in the daytime. Onco they lost their way through misreading tho compass, and had anxious moments, but did not experience, anything sensational. Once they were observed by a sentry, but they eluded him. Tlie two traversed several substantial towns and many villages. They rationed themselves to seven biscuits daily, and tho supply lasted until tho frontier was reached. Although the distanco to the frontier was MO miles, tho men covered 220 miles owing to their circuitous route. Badcock, with English and Canadian companions, tried to escape in 191G, but was recaptured after covering 180 kilometres, lie was sentenced to nineteen day's solitary confinement, during which ho was severely clubbed by his guards.—Aus.-N.Z.
