Statements quoted from German sources by tlie British Board of Trade Bkow that in the first nine months of last year R500,000 pairs of substitute solea, chiefly of wood, for the repair of footwear were disposed of, and 4,000,000 pairs were sold on tlie open market; For the period froui October to December, inclusive, the ?u»t>ly wae estimated at 24,000,000 pairs. In connection with the manufacture of 'ial(wood soles, 65 firms were engaged, with a wekly output of ' 1,000.000' pairs. There were 180 firms engaged in the manufacture of wholly wood soles for new loot' wear. Beei-li has been the wood chiefly used. / ■ _ . INDIA'S. OILSEEDS OUTPUT. India's production .of oilseeds is worth £50.000,000 a year. Exports of oilseeds, oils, anil oilcake are iu normal times valued at £18,500,000. ' Great. Britain is India'? customer for these articles, but before the war Germany's specially-pro-tected market enabled that country to secure almost a monopoly of the most valuable seeds, the produce ol which was in Eome cases exported to the Uuited Kingdom' in the form of margarine and other edible fats. The recent, great expansion of margarine inamitaiture iu Great Britain may lie expected to alter that slate of, things permanently, and to result in a' better British market for oilseeds .from India and other parts of the , ' Customs duties collected at the port of Wellington yesterday amounted to JE&3S9.
