Mrs. Laird Meredith (Whareanin) returned to the Waivarapa on Saturday from ft visit ■to Wellington. For the first lime in' (he history of the race the English Derby was won this year by a lady. The race was run '•on Juno i, and ,was won by Lady J. Douglas's Gainsborough. Gainsborough, who recently; won the Two Thousand Guineas, is said to be a perfect sample of the English thoroughbred. He was bred by his owner, Lady ■ Douglas, a lceen sportswoman, and i.n expert on all matters pertaining to the breeding and raising of racehorses. She sent Gainsborough into the sale ring as a yearling but the reserve of 2500 guineas was not realised, 2000 guineas being the highest bid and' the colt was retained. Miss I- Braddon, A.E.R.C., is now at the New Zealand Military Hospital Hornchurch, where she is training specially in massage and orthopedic, treatment. There was a very Kood attendance of members, and thoso belonging to the Nursing Division were in'imiform. The ]$ev. H. Watson, vicar of St. Peter's, in the course of his sorinon traced the history of the Order from its earliest days- down to the present time, and showed that now, as then, it had fought for truth and justice, and for the succour of the wounded and the sorrowing. A rather curious coincidence is to be found in the fact that at the downfall of the Order in Malta some centuries ago the Grand Master of the Order was a German.
