During the hearing of a case at Duncdin, in which three firemen of a Swedish steamer were charged wilh being ahseut from their vessels without 'ep.ve. coiineel for the defence (Mr. Irwin) h:i<l Bomething to say regardinc the ShiDping pud Senmen's Act as it. affested forc.inerp. I[e submitted that under Sccljoa 342 of tho Act, only ships of a nation which applied to be gazetted under the section could be dealt with by the section. The Gazette nojice wae sufficient evidence. The Gazette notice produced re f ei'red to the kingdom of Norway and Sweden w'"cn they were a combined nation. Since that Gazette was published the 'wo nations had separated, nnd had at present two Consuls representine them at Duncdin. Tho separate kingdoms of Norway and Sweden had not applied to be gazetted. Therefore, the provisions of this Act could not be invoked. Jtr. Rnmsay (for the prosecution) maintained that the provisions of the Act clearly applied to both Norway and Sweden. It did not matter whether they were combined or not, Mr. Irwin aaid Sweden had not signified her intention of having the Act applied to her. The Court was asked to assume that she wished her sailors te be treated in this way. The fact that the two nations were combined at the dnte of the Gazette notice in 1863 had nothing to do with the attitude of Sweden at the present time. Mr.- Irwin then pcinted out that Poland was not now part of tbe Hussian Empire, and he supposed, according to his legal friend's arrrument. that a ship registered in Poland would now be bound by a Gazette referring to Rus--fin. AVr. 'Ramsay remarked that he would like Mr. Irwin to name one ship on the seas regintored in Poland. He would be very surprised if he could <lo fo. MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. Mr. A.
