The official opening of the Ma6terton Returned Soldiers' Club will take .place at an early date The Masterton group of the Protestant Political Association has decided to form a library. Already a large number of hooks on Protestantism have been promised.

The Rev. J. W. Russell, formerly of Onunakc, was inducted to the charge of tlie Masterton Congregational Church ou Thursday evening. The Revs. ,T. R. Glasson and W. A. Kv.ins (Wellington), and the Rev. A. Hodge (Napier) took part in the proceedings. The Masterton group of the Protestant Political Association has decided to take no part in the by-election for the borough council, believing that the seat should go to the nominee of the Labour Party, and that tho expense of an election is not justified., Only fifteen calls 'to fires have been made upon the Masterton Fire Brigade during the past year. Of these, six only were for fires in buildings. The total ftre loss for the year was iB6 in buildings and .£167 IDs. in contents. This is a decrease of £f-2 10s. compared, with last year, and is a record for tho borough. The, annual meeting of the Masterton Fire Board was held on Thursday. Mr. 0. N. C. Pragnell was re-elected chairman. It was decided to order 500 feet of hose, The estimates for the year amounted to JB118!) 135., and these were approved. Arrangements were made for dealing with the new motor engine. It was reported that five members of tho brigade had been accepted for military service, and were' under orders to pro.ceed to camp. The superintendent (Mr. T. Jenkins) intimated hie intention of resigning, as he had been called for active service. The matter of local officers was left in the hands of the local committee. A considerable .mortality among lambs has been reported in the Masterton district this season. ' ■ ■ ■ Four plumbing, four woodwork, and four dressmaking students at the Masterton Technical School have been entered for the technological examinations in connection with the City and Guilds of London Institute.

A meeting was held in Greytown on Thursday with the view of joining a branch of the Early Settlers' and Historical Association of Wellington. Mr. Mark Mnxton was voted to the chair and explained the purposes of the association. Resolution's were passed duly forming the branch tinder the title of the Wairarapa Branch of the Early Settlers' Association of Wellington.. Mr. W. Tidv was elected chairman of th" b";"icli, and a large committee formed. Mr. Maxton was elected lion, secretary and treasurer. Mr. .Tenkinson, president of the parent association, was present, and gave an address on the aims and objects ol the association and complimented those present on the formation of the branch. Mr. TJdy, who was elected chairman, was 80 years of age la'st May. and is the oldest member of the branch.
