NAPIER PARK MEETING Bid STEEPLECHASE WON BY COLLECTOR. BItAEBUBN DEOPS BEAD APTEK A GEEAT miSH. '.By Telegrnph-Special Correspondent.) Nanior, Juu- 21. The Napier l'arlt Racing Clul's Winter Meeting opened in oicoilout weather with good going, there having only been a Jow Bliowors for several days. The total isator handled ,£19,100, an increaee of £5976 on the corresponding day last vear. There was a very good attendance, which was responsible for tho bigger bct'insr. During the day there wero two m'shaps. In the second race Vr'aioture fell with hCopeatakc, who sustained a broken collarbone. The horse was not -'liiured.' Tho other mishap was in the big cv..nt at tho conclusion of which the aecd celdine Braeburn, who ran a great race, droppod dead. Thero wero no complaints, and the meeting wue altogether a success. In the Hack' Hurdles, Golden Made, Biorncborg, and Tornea were withdrawn. The favourites were Wishful,- Dingle, aud Otara. Minister .and Dingle set a fast pace, but the Aucklander, when 'well clear, fell heavily at tho second fence, aud there was a scramble to avoid him. Wishful was in third place behind Dingle ana Undecided at the six furlongs, with bcadown at the head of the others. At the htilf-mile Wishful took charge, and soon afterwards Dingle gave way lo The hummit. The latter retired n.t tho straight entrance, where, Ellis brought Otara with a rattle, and ho and Wishful took on at the last fence together. Wishful made the hotter jnmp, but Otara's condition stood to him,' and in a great l-ace tht favourite won by a head. Castalia was three lengths away, and then camo Kahumanfeu, I'aparcss, and The Summit Expedition and Forum were the withdrawals from the Hack Steeplechase, lhc public only inquired for Torchy and Yellow and Black, and they went, out caual favourites. Tho latter and Waioture made the running from Bollin, Jem, and Torchy. Down the back Waioture fell, and lorcny ran into second place, but in the run home he could not make an impression on Yellow and Black, who won well. Jem was a, noor third. The big Flat Handicap was regarded,as very open, and this restricted speculation somewhat, Bagdad was the actual favourite. At the start ho got cut out and was whipping tho fieli as the half-mile waß iiaesed. Hero Hydrus was showing the way to Hiero and Aetrophcl, with Lady Louisa next. Aetronhel was first into the straight, but he failed to run on, and Lady Louisa took charge at the distance. She was challenged by Hiero in tho run home, and in a good finish tho maro won by a Deck. Detroit finished well in third place, aim then camo Hydrus and Bagdad. The lastnamed was most unlucky uoj. to win. Hcratchings reduced the big Steeplechase field to five runners. Braeburn and Collector had a great duel for favouritism on the machine, but tho latter had the pull at the finish. Diavolo had a Us break for a milo and a half, when the others ran to him. Uu tho straight the second time Record ran to the lead, but at tho half-mile Collector displaced him, aud went on alone. Across the bottom Braeburn was struggling uiidei 1 his big weight. Collector did not nut a foot wrong and won by fifty yards. Braeburn and Record fought out a good finish for second place, mid when the old top-weight got his head in front tho crowd cheered lustily. Diavolo was fourth and St. Elmn last. On returning to weigh in, Braeburn fell dead, hut the stipendiary steward went out and got the rider aud his gear to weigh in. 'i'he death ot tho top-wci<rht after such a glino struggle was tho general theilio of conversation for the rest of the afternoon.

All started in the Necklace, tins public preferring Lord Nelson to the .. others. Bhlirilndi! set a faut pace, but was in troitblc after going six furlongs, where Atntitora, Janitor, and Sarah Grand were prominent. The two first-mentioned werp in trouble as. they turned, for home. Here Rio look charge, and ridden right out ho just beat Lord Nelson, with Sarah Grand right up. Atnatoro was fourth. Golden Glade was a better favourite than Art ih tho AUurirl Hurdles, but speculation was confined to the pair, the other trio not being fancied by the general public. It was ono of the best jumping racei , h-er seen on tho course, and in a very fast, race the field was together practically throvflliout. Golden Glade was always i prominent, and at the half-mile ho took ichjirgc. and though strongly challenged, by Gladful and Art lie lipid his own a v ,ul won by a length from Gladful, with Art Hie same distance away. The winner stripped well, and is evidently getting -inure solid with racing. His party would n-ot. hear of his defeat. Ifo was certainly the most forward of the runners. Art looked as if a race or two will make a bin improvement in him. No mie wanted to be on anything but Ibex in the concluding event, hut after a sensational finis!; tho "good thing" was beaten by n lioad. while Eo'.ard was only a, head away in third place. The favourite .imnuort out well, but. across the bottom Hanpr 'Ujley took charge. The favourite fliiisniW strongly, as did Ketard, but tlio result was In favour of Happy Valley, ai dmriberi above.
