FINAL SITTINGS OF COOTEHENCE. Tho final sittings of the Pnblie Service Association Conference took place yesterday. ' In the morning, the conference met tho Public Service Commisaioner and placed before him various matters re([iiiring attention. . Tho visiting delegates were entertained at •luncheon, by the executive committee and the delegates from the Wellington section. In the afternoon, the following remits wero passed:— "That a eeparate section of the association be formed for South Canterbury with headquarters at Timaru." , "That members of the Public Service Association who are appointed by tho Section Committee to represent them as delegates at the Executive Council be placed on the same footing as regards leave as members of the Officers' Institute of the Hailway Department." "That tie Executive Council be recommended to provide for tho appointment of a permanent general secretary at an opportune time." • In connection with the above remit, it was pointed out to delegates that the appointment was desirable on account of the rapidly-growing work of the association. The executive considered that tho' salary to bo offered for. the position should be .£350 per annum. It was estimated that tho creation of the position would involve at a later date an increase in the sulKcription to (Id. a month for officers receiving less than .£l2O per annum; 9<l. a month for officers receiving not less than ,£l2O and not more than ,£220; Is. a month for officers receiving not Ims tlmn JC22O per annum and not more than .€370; Is. fid. a month for officers receiving over .£370. The appointment would also involve many other increases in association expenditure, particularly in regard to tho upkeep of an office, including rent, shorthand writer and typist, travelling expenses, etc. Tho following remit, in connection with a charge laid by the permanent head of the Labour Department, was also passed: "That in view of the circumstances of the case a subscription list be circulated inviting contributions ioirurds the payment of JUiss 'Morrison's legal' expenses, and that the Labour Department be requested lo refund tho amount for reasonable personal ■ expenses incurred' in defending the charges laid against her." It was also decided to recommend thai Maori and Esperanto be inserted in place of Greek and Latin in examinations for entry to, and promotion in, tho Public Service (at the option of the candidate).
