"Tlio Australian Industrial Stnndard" sava '.bat- arrangements art beiug energetically pushed forward -which, in all likelihood, will result iu the establishment of the concrete shipbuilding industry in Australia on a. large ecalo in the near future. The Commonwealth Government, views the project with a sympathy that, has been intensified by lite fact that Australia, might now be the foremost concrete shipbuilding country in the world if our political rulers had shown a larger faith in Australian iiapacity. The truth is that certain Australian engineers were foremost amongst the world's craftsmen iu recognising Ihe possibilities of concrete, ship construction; and more than a year ago they had elaborate plans, which were submitted to the Government, for the building of concrete ships of great tonnage. The Government., at that time, thought the enterprise too problematic, to encourage, and the. result was that Australia, loit the credit of pioneering this important industry. America,- being less conservative and timorous, has reaped the reward we should have won. Her harvest came when the concrete ship Faith, 7900 tons, successfully compioted her trial trip the other day, battling her way triumphantly through an 80-kuot ga e to her port of destination. The laith'wns built to a design resembling closely in every essential principle of construction the plans prepared for submission to the Commonwealth Government by the aforesaid Australian engineers. laugh,, by this experience the folly of deprecating Australian talent and enterprise, the Federal Government is now both willing and ea"er to fae.ililaU the initiation of a concrete shipbuilding industry in. the Commonwealth. The original Australian designers have lately resumed the local project which was so unfortunately discountenaiiced last year, and we unaerMaud that all the requisite cap tal will be forthcoming as soon as the preliminary arrangements, now being pressed tovardß completion, are completed. , Later advices state that the Prime Minister (Mr. .Hughes) and Mr. A\. L. Oomvn. president of the Company which built the concrete ship Faith at San irancisco have conferred on the subject of building a large number of concrete ships in Australia if the company's engineers deem it feasible, and if the Commonwealth Government approved the project. Mr Comyn says that au understanding has been reached for Australia to pay a, royalty for the patent process, and the superintending of the construction yards and ships.

The Mapourikn is due from Auckland direct to-day, a.nd is to sail to-morrow on the return trip.
