A VALUABLE PLANT

Sir,—ln Hugh Fountain's book, "The Lund of the Amazon," which will bo lound in the Parliamentary Library, there appears an account of a valuable plant know as "enco," which . grows abundantly in the upper Amazon legions of Brazil. This plant is famous for its strength-giving qualities, and for (he fact I hat it enables those undergoing the most fatiguing journeys to carry on under the most trying conditions, without discomfort or weariness. .AVliilo it is a tonic- and a stimulant, it leaves no' depressing nl'ter-ofl'ccls. I do not know whether tho nulhnr of the book qnoled is an authority in these matters, but if_ tlio thing is as good as he alarms it might be well worth while lor oiir /rmy authorities to see that New Zealand troops are supplied. The Indian muleleers always carry a supply of caco when making their journeys over the mountains from the headwaters of the Amnion to the coast.
