CLUBS' ANNUAL REPORTS NEWTOWN CLUB. The annual report of tho Newtown Club otafes that ninety-seven names were en the register at the commencement of the year; six i\qk members and one .supernumerary weru elected; four have resigned, two have passed to the Great Beyond, and one has been written oil. .Including the names of those members who have expressed their intention of resigning, but whose resignations have not yet been accepted, the number of members now on the hooks, including two lilo members and one supernumerary, is ninety-one. The directors have, been pleased to offer Mr. \V. A. Eoborts, who lias' gone into camp, free membership whilst on active service, and suggest a similar benefit being given to any inembeir who in such manner is serving tho country. The loss by death of Messrs. J. Telford and J.J. Flyger, is much regretted. The committee extends deepest sympathy to their families, and also to those other members whose families have suffered in tho great war. Tho year has been, a troublous one financially. The directors acted upon tho decision of tho extraordinary general meeting, and the result has been fairly satisfactory. There is a. small credit balance. Club competitions have been got oil successfully. The entry fees have been given to the fund founded for tho benefit of (ho below-deck ratings in tho British Navy. The green played fairly well throughout tho season. Mr. J. Earle resigned tho carctakership at tho end of the season, after several -years of efficient service. The appointing of his successor is a mattar for early consideration by tho now directorate'. The green surroundings hav<! been much improved 'by a. small but enthusiastic number of members. Thanks to several handsomo donations received by tho supervising committee tho billiard table has been paid for. Mr. Waller Read is entitled to the best thanks of the members for having advanced tho money for the cash purchase of tho table, and Mr. Hanson for his close supervision of the table revenue. THORNDON CLUB. Tho annual report o£ the Thorndon Club states, regarding Iho club's finances, that the year, commenced with a credit balance of £12 10s. 3d., and finished with the sum of ja:i 3s. 2d. in hand. 4161 ss. was paid for wages and labour, as against XI3I 10s. lor the previous year. Land tax .t'-i Is. 9d. is an item appearing on tlio balance-sheet for tho first time. Tho membership remains practically the'sumo as last year, and although several new members were- elected, they only balanced the number of resignations. In Hie course of its report tho Match Committee says:—Our main effort this season was to confino play of members to our own green as much as possible, and with this object in view engagements with other clubs were considerably reduced compared with previous sea-, son.-:. However, we had several interclub games, and although the resultten wins and nine losses—was not altogether satisfactory, the games were, much appreciated hy members. These games include two matches against combined elubs.ono of which we won by 50 points and the other by the narrow'margin of one point. We recommend this combined game to be an annual fixture. On the whole, we found the club matches most satisfactory. The system of inviting entries for the pairs and rinks, and loon arranging teams by ballot is in our opinion unworkable; in almost cverv match substitutes had to be found, with the result that interest was lost by all concerned. For tho coming season wo strongly recommend nomination teams. Wo further suggest that at the beginning or next season all members be invited to stale clearly, by subscribing their names to various lists of events, the games they are willing to take part in throughout the season—club competitions, interchip games, and so on, so that tho selector will know the players he can confidently draw upon. We feel sure the effect would be keener competition anil co-operation of players, and produce enthusiasm that is so desirable for the suc- , cess of our club. [ The contribution towards the combined howTtng effort for the Soldiers' Christmas Fund amounted to .£79 18s. lid., of which -J-2-1 os. Gd. was subscribed by members, mo balance being the result of tho sale of cakes, flowers, etc., at the bowlers' stall by lady friends of tho club. During tho year one of our most popular members, Mr. W. Wiggins, jun., enlisted, anil he has gone to fight for liis King and country. With regret the directors report the death of Mr. E. W. Seaton, who had been a member of tho club sinco 1595; at the lime of his death he was a director and one, of the green committee; also Dr. A. Martin, another old member, and Mr. Morris. WELLINGTON CLUB. The thirty-second annual report of the Welington Bowlinj Club, Ltd., states that the year commenced with a debit balance of X-771 19s. lid., and closed with a debit -balance of .£894 12s. sd. With deep regret tho directors record tho deaths of four members of tho club—Messrs. R. Carter, A. Levy. J. Mandel, and C. Parata. Thirty-four new members were elected during tho year ended May 31, 1918, and the loss by resignation and other causes was 27, leaving n total membership (including U honorary members) of 202 on th.? above date.

Dealing with the activities of (he year, the report states that the Duthie'Cup Competition took place on the Hult Club's green, on February 7, and resulted in a win for the Wellington Club's rinks. I lie (dub was represented by the following players: Holdsworth. Kinvig, Ledger, Sievwright (s.); Salek, Wylie, Thonmson, Erskine (s.). This is the eleventh occasion upon which the competing clubs have met. and tho fifth timo thai;' the Wellington Club has won the coveted'tropliy. On February 2 the annual match against the combined city and suburban clubs was played, and once again the Wellington Club met with success. Fifteen rinks took part, and the total number of points scored was 379, against 218—a record win of IGI points. Contributions during tho year by members for patriotic purposes amounted to Mil is. (id., making a total of JM2S since the war began. The club also took part.in the big effort | by the combined sports associations to | raise funds for the purpose of providj ing trench comforts for our soldiers. On I account of tho unsatisfactory condition of I the upper green for'some time past, the i question of its renovation was gone info by tlio directors, and it was finally decided to carry out the work, which lo all intents and purposes meant' the remaking of the green. Mr. Crawford, of Karori, was entrusted' with the work, •mil from present appearances he has faithfully carried it out, and it is hoped that members will fully appreciate the , efforts of tlio directors on their behalf. The cost to duto.is .£225. In order to meet the continued vise in the prico of every article required by the club, the directors are compelled to recomI mend an inorenso in the annual subscription;, and n notice of motion to alter the figure from .£3 lis. to .til life. (id. will be considered at the annual meeting. In conclusion, the directors record their thanks for and appreciation of the able assistance rendered by the ladies at the various functions held at the club-house, and also for the successful showing which the club made in the Combined Sports Associations' patriotic appeal, which was due to their untiring efforts.
