VERNON'S CAREER. (Rec. Juno 20, 9.20 p.m.) London, Juno 19. Vernon, an English Government official who was arrested in connection with the charges against Sir Joseph Jonns of having dealings with tho enemy, is 'ho son of n, naturalised Gorman, Halm, who was connected with Jouas's firm until 1917. Vernon changed liiß name- after the outbreak of war. Mr. Muir, tho prosecuting counsel, said that tho polico had found documents showing that Jonas was corresponding with Von . Gontard, of Berlin, who was connected with a German armament firm. Ho also was in correspondence with Ziescang, who is English born, but. of German parents, and formaii of Vickers's Works at (.'rayford, where Vickers's < oro establishing a large plant for tho manufacture of (lie now ride. Vernon in April, 1913, informed Jouas tiiat certain German works hoped to supply smail arms to the British Government on a largo scale. Jonas in November, 1913, instructed Vernon to ascertain tho details of Vickers's rifle and plants capacity. This request obviously arose-' from Von Gontard's letter two days earlier requesting Jonas to obtain' this information.—Aus.-N.Z. Cablo Assn.
