LEVIN NOTES
IFroin Our Special Correspondent.) A deputation from the llorowhenua Count;; Council waited 011 the Lcviil Borough Council at its meeting last Monday, night: to ask the council's assistance "'the purcha.se of part of Air. Lindsay M'Donnkl'a property at Heatherlea for the lorining of a new road which, when tompleledi would result in shortening the distanco between Levin and foxtou and also make more level running. AIV. Broadbelt, principal speaker for the deputation, spoke at some length, giving clearly an outline of hia council's intention and the probable cost (.£701)), mentioiii ig also the many advantages of tho road to J.eviu and concluding by stating lhat liis- council considered that the borough should contribute one-third of the cost. Many important questions were asked by iiilferent members of the council, and the Mayo'r thanked tin deputation for their clear outline of the ense, and stated that although lie personally was not altogether in favour of the proposal he could assure them that it would have, the earnest consideration of the council. After the deputation withdrew the council discussed the proposal at length, and finally resolved to make 11 visit of inspection to the property at an early date and to, hold over decision meanwhile. Levin is once more congratulating itself (and factory manager Mr. Smellie) 011 the success of its butter exhibits at the National Dairy .Show at. Palmerston North. To win the championship of New Zealand is no small thing, especially when one remembers the hig'i standing of this country's products in tho Home markets and how favourably .they compare with those of otlieV countries. There is a great shortage of liouso accommodation in Levin at the present time,, duo partly to the influx of n£W residents, including wives and children of. religious objectors, and partly to ttie high cost of building material, people preferring to buy old properties rather than build. At Monday night's meeting of the Levin Borough Council a reply was received from the Palmerston North Hospital Board to the Town CleYk's suggestion that, ns he consilered tho old method of collecting the board's acounts for this district unsatisfactory, they should appoint delegates from each of the local bodies in tho district to attend to the matter, because it was very difficult for one man, who probably knew very few people in the other counties, to keep track of the accounts. The board's -renlv approved of suggestion. The Levin Fire Brigade, evidently dissatisfied with the council's method of control, handed in its_ resignation at last Monday night's meeting of the Borough Council. The brigade gave as one of its main reasons the fact that most of tho men lived too far from tho business portion of the town, and suggested that the new brigade should consist, as near-,' ly as possible, of residents living nearer the town. The Mayor moved that the brigade's resignation be accepted, and that a letter of appreciation for its past services be forwarded to it. This was carried. The Mayor then announced that ho would call a public meeting of citizens interested in tho formation of a new brigade. It is understood that the council will consider the question of establishing a Fire Board when the new brigade has been formed. The members of the Levin Domain Bonrd, at their meeting last Monday night, decided in view of the lateness of the golf season and the misunderstanding at present existing between golfers and the board to sPnd two representatives to the meeting of golfers to be held shortly, and nlaee before them the views of the board in the matter of fees to be charged for this season. The representatives will have nower to make definite arrangements with tho golfers, providing the latter are ready to guarantee not less than ,130 revenue for the season's play to nie»t the cost of upkeep, eld., of the new links.
Tim Horowlienua County's Patriotic Fund is shortly lo benefit by die production of a new musical revue bv a number of local amateurs. Over thirty people will take part, and a stipeial feature will lv> made of the lighting and dressing effects.
