CI. A. Cooper, S.M., presided, and i Messrs. i). McLaren and \Y. Perry sat t with him. Sergeant-Major, Smith was • the military representative. A Fire Loss. 1 Mr. C. P. O'Donnell appeared for Francis William Martin, bootmaker, of Levin, whoso appeal came up for rehearing. Appellant stated that lie had threo brothers at the front and 0110 in 1 New Zealand over tho military age. By ■ a lire 011 May 19 last lie had lost i2(JUO worth of stock, and his actual loss above insurances was over ct'COO. lie asked for three or four months' leave from the CI Camp to enable him to establish tho business again, so that it might be left in charge of his wife. The appeal was dismissed, leave being granted- until tho September CI Uraft -is mobilised. Relief Granted,. Tho adjourned appeals of James Joseph Fox (foreman hatter) and Stanley Midgley (hatmaker) came up for decision. Air. Mazengarb appeared in support of tho appeals. 111 tho ease of Fox, the board adhered to its former decision of March 4 to grant indefinite exemption. Ull his own behalf, Midgley stated that lie was the solo support ot his widowed mother aud a sister aged nine. Decision was reserved sine die. George Sandwith, commercial traveller, for whom' Mr. A. W. Blair appeared; was granted conditional exemption oil business groups. His case nail been adjourned for three months, and lie was yesterday granted indelinite exemption so long as Mr. J. L. Morrison, his employer, is engaged in an advisory capacity with tho Munitions and Supplies Department. ' 1 Oscar It. Greer, farmer, of Tawa Flat, had been granted time to enable him to arrange with one of his brothers to talc: ovor his farm* and he appeared to nsk for still more time. The appellant said that he had not been able to arrange with any of his brothers to take over the farm. Tho board dismissed the appeal, granting leave until September. Thi ease of Norman George Johnson, grocer, of Wellington, was an appeal for total exemption by reservist's mother, and also by his employer. Tho motht'r said that slio had three sons, two of whom were at the front and the remaining son, Norman Johnson, was in indifferent health. Tho case was adjourned until the next sittings of the board. On Religious Grounds. TIIO appeal of William Leonard Fautliam, Salvation Army officer, of Auckland, was reheard, Mr. Evans appeared to snppo'rt the appeal, which was made by the Salvation Army authorities. Fan.thani had written a letter to tliet military authorities stating his personal wish that the appeal should not be pressed, as he considered that lie should go before the married men. Tho Salvation Army authorities, however, still wished to go on with the appeal, for the reason that so many officers had gone with tho I'orccs that no more could be spared. F-jntham was, Air. Evans staled, content to leave the matter with his leaders. The appeal was adojurned sine die. The appeals of three Christadelpliians, Ernest George D. Daniel, farmer, of Jiivierton; Edwin Henry Hill, farmer, Riverton; and Thomas Boddington. grocer, of Christchnreh, were supported by Mr. John M. Troup, managing Brother of tluo Christadelphian body in New Zealand, the' appeals being on religious grounds. The three appeals were allowed on tho conditions prescribed by tho law. Essential Men. Tho appeal of Daniel lmanucl Larsen, farmer, J'arapurauniu, was a s;no die case for'rehearing. Appellant was a dairy farmer supplying milk to Wellington City, and ms only brother, now in France, had an interest in some of the land i'arnned. The board adhered to its previous sine die decision. Richard Meets-King was a sergeant in tho riurty-Jirst Reinforcements, but he made application for indelinite leave, aud it was granted. It was this matter that canuß up for revision, Appellant was a siieepfiu nier, having taken over a i lock of laud in Nelson from his father. /The block was Ifilly, aud. the carrying capa- ' city was 2600 sheep. Appellants only brother was killed at the front, but he did not advance this as a ground of appeal. He said that as soon .as 110 could arrange to do so he wished to get back into the forces. . Tho board adhered to its former decision to give exemption sine die. The case of Sydiney Jacobs, clerk in the employ of Messrs. Nathan and Co., camo up or rehearing. 'The case was adjourned until September. Mr. A. Gray, K.C., who appeared for the appellant employers, said that the board previously hearing the case had declared that one of two employees, Jacobs and Little, was essential. As Little was now in eamp it was urged that Jacobs ought to be left in his position. , Appeal on behalf of Walker Heseltine, bee farmer, Levin, and manager of the Anglican i?oys' llome at. Melliug, was made by the Anglican Boys' Home Society. Mr. J. A. Tripe appeared for the appellants. ' It appeared that tine work being done at the home by the reservist and his wifo was important work which could | 11111 be done by elderly people. _ \ The board.adhered' to its former decision and adjourned the appeal sine die. ' Captain M'Endoe, of the Merchant Ser- ; vice Guild, appealed 011 the ground of 1 public interest for Captain William Gor- ' don, muster mariner, harbourmaster aud ] pilot and Customs officer at l'icton. Mr. ; Buddie appeared to support tho appeal. Captain iGordon said that lie was a married man with a wife and one child. Hardship Alleged,
John Alexander Main, clerk in the employ of llio Wellington Woollen Company, appealed on tlie ground of undue hardship on account of his mother's health. It was in evidence that the mother was very ill indeed. The board reserved decision sine die. James Henry Carson, gunner in the Thirty-ninth lleint'oicements, N.Z.F.A., applied for indefinite leave. He had been in camp thirteen months and he made his application on account of his wife's health. Decision was reserved. George Waldcmar Eiby, a clerk in the employ of the Hospital Hoard, asked for leave on account of his wife's health. Tho application was adjourned until the August sittings of the board. William Miller, machinist in tho Railway Workshops, Petoiic, was given leave till July. His -ground of appeal was that the financial Assistance lioard had not given him aid. Appellant was medically examined on June 17. l'Jl". Other Cases. Public interest was the ground of the appeal made by tho United Friendly Societies on behalf of their dispenser, Ben O'Connor. It was represented that no successor could' bo found for Mr. O'Connor, but of this the jjoard was not satisfied, and the ease was adjourned until next sitting of the board to permit of inquiry being made about one chemist who had applied for the position. The adjourned case of George L. Chatwin, chemist, came up for determination. Mr. George Castle, his employer, said that he had succeeded in replacing Chatwin, but ho asked for a littlo further time fpr the reservist. Leave till the July draft was granted. Clilford Peel, of Northland, agent, withdrew his appeal, hearing of which had been adjourned. He said that he was closing down his business, and he asked the board to give liiui leave until July IG. This leavo was granted. Tho board will sit again at 10 a.m. today,
