ENSLAVED BELGIUM
-0CHILD WOBK IN WAlt ZONE. From a letter of protest addressed late-, ly by tho Belgian deputies and senators to tho Gorman Governor-General in Belgium it appears that forced labour is applied m'ore ruthlessly than ever to the civil population. "Thousands of men in the provinces of Flanders, Hainaut, and Luxemburg havo been torn from their homes and deported to Northern France, to a zono exposed to bombardments and air raids.' Many havo had no leave for 15 or 1G months. The regime is so bad that the majority have died from exhaustion and privation or been tent to hospital invalided for life. ' Two hundred and sixty-five young boys from Mons (whose names, ages, and schools are quoted in a list annexed to l-hi letter) are at present unloading trucks in France, ten miles behind, tho front. These, all under 16, some scarcely 11 or 12 years of age, are obliged to do the wtirk of strong labourers. On I'riday 28, 2 r >o men over 50 years of ago were taken ill the B'iine district. They remained locked up in cattle trucks without food for 24 hours in bitter cold.
