MEETING OP THE COUNCIL. A meeting of the Petouo Borough Louncil was hold last evening. The Mayor (Mr.'J. W. M'Ewan) presided, and tnero \vero present: Councillors J. L. Uurehouse, E. J. Tovey, E, H. Jones, M Kenzie, ,T. Foster, W. Cox, C. IV brocklebauk, S. Newlaud, and ,T. M'Doua gall'. I ho treasurer of the Ked Jersey Appeal Committee (Mr. W. B. Nicholson) wrote, thanking (he council for. its donation. Councillor Churcliousu moved that tho matter be recorded in the minutes, and . stated that he would oppose any further donations being granted by the council in respect to war funds, and contended that every comfort of the New Zealand . soldiers at the front should be attended to by tho Government. Tho Gear Meat Company's application for the renewal of its ment oxport slaughterhouse. license ivns granted. } Mr. Charles Harper wrote, agreeing to act' as the council's assessor at the sit- ■ ting- of (lie Assessment Court. The Hon. T. M. AVilford wrote, acknowledging the receipt of the council's ( letter in respect to main arterial roads, and stating that he would see that the ! matter received careful attention. A letter was received from tho Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce, jislt--1 ing tho council to send two delegates to a conference to bo held at Palmerston North on Thursday, with a view to forming a hydro-electnc power leaguo. The invitation was accepted, and the Mayor and Councillor Jones were appointed delegates. The Assistant Public Trustee wrote,, accepting the tender for the repairs to Nevis Lochy and Armidalo Street, and j asking that tho work be proceeded with. This was ugrced to. The Minister of Defence wrote, stating that it was intended to have prepared a history of 'the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, and asking for the council's assistance in procuring private letters, photographs, and other material that would prove of assistance to tho compiler of the history.
