THE FRENCH—A NATIONAL TESTIMONI
Sir— Charity l begins at home; but let us not forgot the French, the heroes of. this war. As was said of the great Marlborough, they "have never lost a battle." \ They have had no disaster, no .notable defeat. Fortune has smiled on the brave. When the Russians grew tired of the war and ran awny, the French turned onlv a more resolute face to the enemy. After four years they are still sustaining the greater part of the conflict. _ This is their glorious record, and it is all pure patriotism. "La. Pa trie" shall not go under the heel of the Hun! The French Boldier gets 2d. per day, the dependants nothing. Is there a record like it in the wotld's history? Let us honour this nation of heroes—we in this distant corner of the world living in the lap of luxury. Let. us put up a national subscription with not less tnait Is. per head. That would mean £50,000 at least. Who would not give Is. for French sufferers P They havo suffered for us, for Neiv Zealand would have been but a mouthful for the Huns if they had beaten the French and crippled England. We have our heroes, ths immortals whose names will inn down the page of history like the Spartans at - Thermopylae; but let us not forget a nation of heroes at. this supremo moment when the hordes of the barbarians nra thundering at the gates of Paris. Francais! C'est toi quo j'aime.—l am, etc., D. E. HUTCHINS.
