Gillespie, third engineer 011 the Kaitnna, has been relieved by Mr. 1). White. The Australian-owned steamer Glaucus was expected to arrive at Dunedin on Saturday _ (according to the Dunedin "Star") with a ful! cargo of guana from the pacilic. After discharge the vessel will proceed to ,Wellington, where she will probably load general cargo for Austra lia. The Glaucuß is an iron vo6sel of 1365 tons gross register, and was built, at Sunderland in 1878. She visited Dunedin some years ago. Captain W. R. Reynolds is in command. I
Since tho reorganisation of inter-State shipping programmes in connection with the central committee's activities for the j more effective use of inter-State tonnage | llicre have been a number of instances of i unusually smart, loading and discharc- j iup operations Ports provided with j mechanical contrivance for moving cargo (says the 'Melbourne "A.se"). At Newcastle I during the last week of May the steamer j I'eriod (Howard Smith, l.tri.), while "load- . in; coal with tho aid of four electrically-' controlled craned, tool: aboard 4403 tons ! of coal in slightly over ten hours. According to advice received by fluddartI'arker, bid., tho Period's performance, ! which wn.s said to be a record for New- ] castle, has been cxccedcd by the. cargo J steamer Werrihce, which subsequently j loaded 5780 tons of coal in 12 hours and 50 minutes by means of tho same four electrical cranes in Newcastle coal basin. In addition to those smart loading i Vforniauccs a vessel, by means of tho mechanical device installed at Port Pirie. discharged within 48 hours <000 tons of j coal. With rogard to the question of tho I installation of mechanical appliances at Melbourne, shipowners point out that until such time as a complete reooranieiiioit of Melbourne's berthing arrangements is possible, the maintenance of such mcchani- j cal coal-discharging appliances would bo | a very costly problem for the portauthouties. . To ensure tho economic use of I mechanical contrivances it would be necessary that, all coal bonis be discharged in | the one vicinity, tint in t.he ease of Mel-| bourne at. present, tn;il b'-rths are scattered practically all over the purt.
