A letter was also read from the Aeting-Primo Minister regarding tho intention of proparing a history of the New Zealand Forces. Sir E. O. Gibbs wus appointed a trustee of the P.O. Savings Bank account. It was reported that 53 cases were sent to London and six cases to I'lgypl to the value of JCOGB 2s. 10d. Vor the month of May the receipts totalled ,£179 I.ls. 9d., and the expenditure amounted to .£470 lGs._!)d. Accounts were passed for payment totalling JM.T) Us. -til. Mrs. Gillman has been unanimously appointed secretary. Y.W.C.A. Notes. . The large hall of the Y.W.C.A. was filled with girls and young women on Thursday, when Dr. Platts-Jtills gave her lirst lecture on physiology and sex hvgicno. The president of tho Y.W.C.A., Ah , :)., Robert Pearson, presided, anil in her opening remarks sho expressed a warm appreciation of tho board to Dr. Platts-Mills for tho lime she had given in preparation i'or these lectures and for her willingnoss to undertake what must inevitably have been a very difficult subject. .Dr. Platts-Milk held the attention of Uio uuilicnco for nearly an hour, ami at the close she gave permission for questions relating to tho subject to be sent in to the general secretary or lo be brought to the next lecture. The acclamation at tho close was warm and enthusiastic, and tho girls aro looking forward to hearing more from the doctor next Thursday, when the subject; will bn "Reproduction and the Responsibility of tho Individual to tho Race."

Tho subject of an address to bo given at the Y.W.C.A. to-morrow afternoon by Mrs. M'Clay will be "Things That Will Count." All young women and girls will be welcome. It will bn the puriposo of the speaker to present the great ideal for women in tho present crisis. There was some rejoicing at tho Y.W.C.A. Board meeting last Thursday whenit was announced that tho membership of the association had readied 1000.

A very good musical programmo has been arranged for tho social lo be given to-night at the Y.W.C.A. by Miss Clarke, assisted by Miss Haze] Fuller and Miss Sheldon. Soldiers will bo welcome.

Mr. and Mis. Arthur Bennett, who had been visiting Mrs. ];'. MacKonzie, llawke's Bay, lwvo returned lo Masterton.

A general meeting of the Wellington branch of tho Women's National Council will be held in tho Y.W.C.A. rooms ou Monday evening, when Mrs. Havverson will give an address upon "Tho Reconstruction of the Homo." Working mothers are specially invited, and there will be a discussion afterwards as to ways and means of lighteuing the labours of the mothers in tho homes. The lecture begins at eight o'clock.

On Wednesday last tho ladies of the Red Cross Shop held a card evening at the Seatoun Tea Kiosk, to enable some token of appreciation to be given a returned soldier injured while assisting them in Iho Woodward Street Shop. A innst enjoyablo evening was spent. Over fifty residents and others wero present. A hearty vote- of thanks was passed to Misses Pago and Halliwell, who gavo the room, fire, and lighting free of charge.

Tho death occurred at tho family residence on The Terrace on Thursday of Mrs. Amelia Charlotte Edwin, widow of the late Commander R. A.i-Edwin, R.N. Mrs. Edwin, who had lived for many years in Wellington, was a daughter o*f the late Commissary-General Brigden, an Imperial officer who went through the Maori War, and she was married at old St. Paul's Church in this city. She is survived by a son (Captain A. M. Edwin, now on the high seas in charge of a transport) and three. daughtersMrs. Leslie Gorton, of Fcilding, whose husband is in camp at Feathorston; Mrs. Chaytor, of London, wife of Colonel d'Arcy Chaytor, commandant at New Zealand Headquarters in Cairo; and Miss Edwin, of Wellington. In former years Mrs. Edwin took a great interest in St. Paul's parish affairs. Sho had only been ill for a few days beforo hor death,

Women's Protest Re Removal of Magistrate. A meeting of tho Society for tho Protection of 'Women and Children was held yesterday. Ludy Stout presided. Tliero were present: Alosdames A. Hoby, S. Kiikcaldiu, Karverson, A. l<. Atkinson, W. A. jJvan.i, and Glover. Cases which had been investigated were reported upon. Tin; following resolution was passed :—"That this meeting of tho fS.I'.W. and C. earnestly protests against tha proposed removal of Mr. ,S. E. M'Carthy from the Wellington Bench of Magistrates. During; his term of office hero ho has administered the law fearlessly and consistently, so that euch important, provisions as those relating lx> iinli-"shoiitiiig" and sly grog-selling hava become something better than a dead letter. He has greatly helped in improving tho milk supply, has mado our streets much safer for children ajid old people, and has fostered every attempt to sategi'.ard tho interests of homo and family life. This meetings trusts that the Government will not, in die face of thb wide satisfaction with tu« Magistrate's work as shown, by the recent resolutions of the. City Council, inflict upon tho citizens the hardship and injustice of his removal hi deference to the influsneo of certain opposition." Tho stock which has been assembled for tho auction, the public is aesured, is a wonderful array, and should particularly interest chemists, merchants, and others vhoso wnroe require bottles. Tho schools havo done wonderful work, and aro still doing it. Everyone is appealed to for further efforts, for this particular auction (at which, by tho way, tho Boy Scouts will assist), is to Iμ followed by others in order lo augment the fund which ie to provide comforts for tho sailors. Collecting depots at Island Bay have been arranged for with Taylor and Brown, tho Parado; 11. S. Clark, chemist; C. Tucker, sen.; Mrs. Fletcher, tho tram terminus, and, Miss C. C. Odlin, 272 the Esplanade. As the cartago of tho bottles and tins and sacks runs into monoy, tho committee will bo grateful for donations. The following aro acknowledged :—Tho Kev. An idea new to Wellington, and, it is hardly necessary to state, originated for the benefit of Rod Cross work, was introduced yesterday on Lambton Quay, outside Messrs. Kirkcaldio and Stains's, when the passing' public wero invited to dress a. soldier. The invitation was decidedly novel and was readily responded to, tho "dressing" creating a great amount of interest. Aβ a. matter of fact tho soldier was really a large chart or drawing, and tho idea was that tho figure, reclining on a table, should bo outlined in money (coppers or silver). Not only was the figure outlined in money, even to the hat, belt and boots, but ho was covered with it altogether, and as a result of her enterprise Mrs. ITiloy. who introduced it from Sydney realised o sum of £tt. She was assisted by. Mrs. Eaton Turner, Miss Barnntt, Miss Bv.tler, and Miss .Taeobsen. The sum nf 4iß alone was taken in pennies and tho rest in silver and pound notes. Interned Seamen.

A letter of acknowledgment, dated March 7, has been received from Sir J nomas Mackenzie, High Commissioner for i\ew Zealand in London, by Mrs. Hamilton Jv'immo, organiser foV tho ! W.C.T.U. in New Zealand in its work 1 for seamen, in which ho expressed ap- | preciation of the action of the committee 1 in allocating for the relief of New inland seamen and engineers who are prisoners of war in Germany and elsuwhere tho sum of jSIOO. This .sum was part of the gift of .£l5O recently forwarded to tho British and Foreign Sailors' Socielv, of which the Dowager Ludy Dimsdale 'is president aud treasurer. The- High Commissioner also forwards a. list of Iho names of individual engineers and seamen who have been so unfortunate as to meet with this fate. , Four of these prisoners belonged to the s.s. Otaki and it is a noticeablo fact that they are interned in differeut prison'camps, so that they have not even the comfort of companionship in misfortune. Mrs. Nimmo hopes to raise a further sum for tlieso seafaring prison ore of war. Wellington Red Cross Shop, The .Wellington Nulling Division (St. John Ambulance) wuro in charge of flie Wellington Red Cross Shop yesterday. Members had worked very hard, and as ft result they had excellent supplies of home produce, meat, including lamb, needlework, home-made' cakes, flowers, etc., which, all found ready purcnasere. As a result of the day a sum of a little- over SMI was made, and as the Nursing Division is but a small band of workers they had every, reason to bn satisfied with their effort. In charge of the stalls were the following:—Mrs. Corrigan, produce; Mrs. Baker, vegetables; Miss Robieson, meat; Mrs. Gibbous and Miss Rothenberg, home-made cakes ;Mra. Hurst, needlework; guesshyj competitions, Miss Corrigan and Miss Grabham. Mrs. Moorhouse (president and treasurer), assisted by Miss Robieson, lady superintendent of tho Nursing Guild, wero the organisers of tho day, and Mrs. Moorhouse assisted in various ways. The following donations aro acknowledged:— Mrs. Woodman, cheque lor £2; Mr. Woodman, j>l; Mrs. J. M'Kerrow, £1. The I raffle of tho supper cloth edged with j Irish crochet is to be hald over till tho I division's next day at the shop in November. Mr. Fraim, of Taitvillo, was the winner of the camisole top. Included in tho amount taken in tho shop was the sum of £1 for flowers,, by Miss Cooper and Miss Moss.

Mesdames Marcello and Pallier, Lingerie, French Blouse, and Millinery artistes, have arrived by this week's steamer from Sydney, and will give a display for ono week nt- the Grand Hotel, Willis Stroet.-Advt.
