RACING IN WAR-TIME

A —~-r AN ENGLISH PROTEST. While the flower of the human race, enys the "Daily Wail," is slowly but surely being decimated on the blood-stained battlefields of Vlanders the undivided efforts of our gallant "sports" are being unstintedly devoted to the alleged pre-' servation of the equine race in England. The unuttorable slush as to the maintenance of our blood-stock is trotted forth with a sad disregard for all the powers of lwlief which the Inimnn race might possess. Knilway companies are cutting down iheir train services; rolling-stock is too scarce. Presumably somo of it is wanted to oonvpy the army of .eports to Newmarket. Candidly speakingly, we think the time has come, for the War Cabinet to put a stop to thfi hypocrisy of this perpetuation of the breed of racehorses. We wish some of our responsible Cabinet Ministers, especially Mr. Bonar Law, would pay a visit; to one of thp*o meetings. We think he would come away with'a. strongly-developed idea as to whoso benefit the meetings were really beiiiß promoted for.'

The human race is in dancer of extinction, not the equine. Tt would not matter in the toast if our blocd-stnek suffered for a few years provided we win the war. although there i> not the least possibility of the racehorse dying out of existence if no racing took place for five years. But imiely no patriotic Englishman would dare to allege that horseracing isnecesury at a timo when the entire effort of the nation requires to be devoted to the winning of the war.
