WELCOME TO THE rev. F. T. READ

A welcome in the form of a drawinproom social was tendered to the Rev. 1 , , t- Head, C.F., minister appointed to the new Kilbirnie circuit, and bis family m tho Hataitni Methodist Church Hail f>n Wednesday evening. . Tho Host and hostess, Mr. and Mrs. F. AV. J. Fear, were assisted by Mcsdnmes L. Brabain and C. Haincs and other ladies of the congregation. ■ Sir. Ee.vr presided ovor the Riithering, ivlnclf was one of the largest ever held in the building, and in welcoming Mr. Bend on behalf of tho congregation, made some interesting references to the (■arly diiys of Melhodism in Kilbirnie. He stated that (he first services were held in his house in Smith Street 30 years ago.

Mr. Ward (superintendent of the Sunday, school) extended a welcome on hehalt of the young people of the cliurcl:, and the Kev, B. Brake, in conveying greetings and well-wishes from the "Wellington South Methodist circuit, referred to Mr. Bejid's long service in the ministry and fitness for the work of (he new circuit.

In replying, Mr. Read, who lias recontly returned to New Zealand after serving on oDe of the hospital shins, stated that he deeply appreciated the warmth of the welcome which had been extended to him ,i'id his family siuco their arrival in KuTiirnie. and that :ie felt assured of the co-operation of liie officers and congregations belonging to the tliree churches placed in his charge. The speeches were interspersed with several competitions, musical items contributed by Mrs. Britain, Misses Nicholas and Brit+ain, and a rceivatioii by Miss A. Monnie. The meeting concluded after the distribution of the prizes pined in the competitions and the serving of refreshments by the Indies of the congregation. Among those present were the Rev. ,T. Crewes, who has been associated with the church for over twenty years, and Councillor J. Castle.
