LOWER HUTT BOROUGH

Ihe Mayor (Mr. E. I>. Risliworth) presided over the fortnightly meeting- of the Lower.Hull; Borough Council, held last evening. There were present: Council lor* J. M'Doiizall, A. Hobbs, Vf. G. Melilnim. W. Walton,-A. WeM, W Cotton, \V. Kerr, J. Brasoll. and S G' Olendon.
A letter was received' from the Palmerston North Chambor of Commerce advising I hat a conference would be held at Palmei-stou North for the purpose of forming n hydro-electric -power league, and inviting tho council to send two tie. legate?. It was resolved to accept the invitation, and the Mayur and Councillor Ken were. Appointed delegates. The ,'uanager of King George's Theatre wrote again urging that tlie council reconsider its decision to insist upon tho attendance at the theatre of a fireman on -Wednesday and Saturdav evenings and (hat the aisles be sft. wide. The council refused to give consideration lo the matter, -ind Councillor M.'.Dnug.ill gave notice of motion to the effect that I lie council waive the condition with respect to the attendance of firemen. A letter was received from Mr. .1. Tioughton asking whether he was entitled to have the approaches to his gate repaired, and if so that the work be put in hand as >oon as- possible. It was resolved to inform the writer thai as the work would fcn o» hi? private property it could not he undertaken bv 'the council.
The Valuer-GeneraUwrote pointing out I hat an Assessment Court would be hold on June 21, when several applications for reduction in value of Butt Borough properties would be dealt with, ami asking the council to appoint an assessor. The council appointed Mr. C. Harper as assosnor.
The District Health Officer wrote recommending I hat certain repairs bo effected to dwellinghouses which he declared were in an insanitary condition. It _ was decided to insist upon the repairs being carried out.
Councillor Clendon pointed out that then* was a dearth of plumbers in the borough. There wore only throe, and he moved that the engineer support any appeals that might, be made by resident plumbers called up for military service. The council- agreed to the motion.
A letter was received from the Borough Solicitor (Mr. 15. P. liuuny) in reference to'an easement from the estate of P. W. Jtale?, deceased, of a right io lay water, gas, and sewer mains through the property occupied by A. Potors in Riverbank Street., : It wns deoidetl to inform the Borough Solicitor that the matter had not yet been formally decided upon by the council.
The reports of the engineer, waterworks engineer,. ranger, and librarian were adopted.
