WHEAT GROWING
AN IMPORTANT DISCOVERY.
What is considered, in New South .Wales, by practical wheatgrowers under ■whose notice the mutter has been brought as a development- of the greatest importance to the. wheafgrowing industry is the discovery of'anew process for treating wheat seed to prevent smut. This is .the result of experiments that have been carried out for five yoara by two officers of.the Department of Agriculture. Mr. Hujrh Ross (chief inspector), andMr. S. P.. Darnell Smith (biolozivt), and it is understood that the conclusion is considered proved beyond all doubt. The new process, of which particulars are not fret available, ,is intended to take the jdace of bluestone'as a preventive of smut. In tho process a machine is used, and a patent has been replied for on behalf of Mr. Darnell Smith for a grainniixer, "for mixing wheat seed with chemical powder for the preventing of disease." A report on the process by ■the officers responsible is now before the Agricultural Department.
