TRAMWAY FIGURES

RETURNS FOR LAST MONTH. The figures for the eight weeks ended May 26 submitted tb the-Tramways Committee of tho City Council yesterday afternoon showed an increaso in revenuo amounting to £2786, over the amount taken during the corresponding period 'of last year, but during that brief time the working expenses jumped JC2G39, which almost accounted for tho wholo of the increase noted. Tho situation for the city to face will bo rendered considerably more acute, when tho rovenuo fails to increase—as it might sooner or later as tho populace becomes denuded by tho demands of war—and the working expenses continue to leap up. All tramway material is becoming" increasingly difficult to obtain at any price, whilst the cost of coal has jumped about 90 per cent, since the beginning of the war, and is allowed to-day to bo one of our moat serious troubles.
