James Byford M'Cudden, D.5.0., M.C., MM, E.F.C., for conspicuous bravery, exceptional perseverance, keenness, and very High devotion to duty on various occasions during December, 191,. and January and February las... Tho Military Medal was awarded Capt. M'Cudden (when a flight sergeant m the BJF.C.) for consistent galnutry courage, and dash during September, 1916, in attacking and destroying an eueiny machine, and forcing two others to land. He also twice crossed the enemy lines at a very low altitude in attacks on Hostile balloons under very heavy fire. The Military Cross was awarded tor conspicuous gallantry in action on lebruI 15, 1917, when he followed a hostile machine down to a height of 300 feet and drove it to the ground. . . Captain M'Cudden won tho bar to his Military Cross for conspicuous gallantly, dash and skill during the period of Au-ust 15-Soptembor 28,. 1917, when ho took part in many offensive patrols (over 30 of which he led) and destroyed five enemy machines, driving three others down out of control. The D.S.O. was awarded liim for conspicuous gallantry on November 29-30, 1917. when he attacked and brought down an enemy twoseater within our lines both occupants bein» taken prisoner. He also encountered an enemv machine during very bad weTthcr conditions at 2000 feet and fought it down to a height of 100 feet, when it was destroyed Captain.M Cudden came down to-within a few feet of the' ground in the enemy a lines and finallv crossed the line at a very low altitude. Subsequent to the award of the bar to the Military Cross ho had been responsible, for tho destruction of seven enemy.machines, two of which fell within our lines.
