MORALS OF THE ARMY
} *T CO-OPERATION BETWEEN BRITAIN AND AMERICA. In the House of lords recently, the Archbishop of Canterbury called attention to the conditions affecting morals and health among aoldiers of the Expeditionary Force in France. He said since he put down the motion the War Office had decided to place maifions tolerees out of bounds for our soldiers, but he now appealed for co-ordination between British and American authorities for the protection of the American soldiers who were coming over to help us. The Earl of Derby, War Minister, observed that there seemed to be nn idea underlying the speeches that had been made that it ,was tho Army alono which was the immoral part of the community. Fie preferred'to deal with the matter as affecting the. country as a whole, and he believed it would be found that the diseases' referred to were more prevalent among civilians Hum in the Army. Tho uhief difficulty, of the Army authorities was in regard to the men who would persist in immorality, and all they could do was to provide for treatment which might as far as was possible prevent them from contracting disease. He assured the House that be would do bis best to seize Hie opportunity of bavin? so many men under military discipline to see how far they could eradicate this fearful scourge. He had seen the Acting-Chaplmu-fieiwra! of the American Forces. That .gentleman desired to co-operate with Jiim in every way and had telegraphed to the President snergesting that certain legal and medical officials should be sent over. It was honed that an understanding would be arrived at by which the two nntions would he nWe to work together for tho common Tied not only of the two Armies, but oi tho two countries concerned.
