At the monthly meeting of the Nelson Harbour Board, a letter was received from the Hon. W. H. Merries, Minister of Kailways, in reply to the. board's requost for a further extension of tho option of the purchase of the Nelson wharves. The Minister stated that the Nelson Harbour Board Empowering Act empowered tho board to raise a loan to purchase 'the wharf within twelve months from October 27, 1917. The Railway Department was precluded by law from accepting anything but cash in payment for the wharf. It did not appear that any serious attempt had boen made by the board to raise the money, and ho suggested tha,t the board confer with the Secretary to the Treasury, who might be able to advise a 9 to the best steps to be taken in connection with the raising of the loan. It appeared to him that before asking him to assent to a further extension of time u real and definite effort should be made to raise Oio loan required, as had been done in the cuso of the Foxton Board, which was in a similar position. If it could be shown that it was impossible to raise the loan at the present time, he would be pleased to consider the question of a further extension, and also the question of an amendment of the Act next session to allow a variation in the method of payment. In the discussion which followed, it was considered ridiculous to compare Nelson with Foxton, where only £5000 was required. It was a different thing to raise over £100,000. It was finally decided that the chairman (Mr. Duncan) and Messrs. MacMahon and Jackson proceed to Wellington and interview the Secretary to the Treasury, with a view to making the best arraugoment possible to bring the purchaao of the wharves to a successful conclusion.
