CALF GIVING MILK

EXTRAORDINARY STORY. A Kiwitea ''armer has supplied an exchange with the following:—"Re my pedigree Jersey heifer calf, whicb is in milk. The caif is just over six months old, and is giving goott milk, and as much as one quarter of"a gallon at a milking. Samples were carefully taken of the , milk and were tested, showing a percentage of 7.4 of batter-fat. I first became aware of her being, iu milk on March 2 last, and there is no doubt that sho had been in milk some time before that. I consider the reason for this very unique condition is the fact that she seemed to mother another calf, somewhat older than herself and allowed it to suck her. This fact, together with her splsudid miltang strain and exceptional motherly instinct, seems to be the reason, in my opinion. 1 have a full-sister of tliti calf in question, which is now under semi-official Ic!>t as a junior two-year-old, and which produced the Department's requirement of 2H1.51b. of bntter-fat in just over six months and this wider very adverse circumstances. The heifer calf is my property, and'l have reared her myself on skini milk from the separator, with no other feeding. She is sfiil milking, although I am trying to dry her off. It will be interesting to seo bow she wil turn out in the future under seim-olheial test."
