THE MAGICAL BANANA
CONSCRIPTED FOR THE WAR, ¥hc banana is being conscripted forser vico in America. The Bureaa of Industries of tho Mexican 'Department of Coruniorco has just concluded a 6omos of experiments with products of tho fruit, and some- astonishing results have been obtained. Tho reports of tho bureau thow that by a series of simple processes tho fruit can be mado to yield: Flour for breadmaking, starch,. vinegar, alcohol, fibres, paper, and cardboard. An effort is being made to introduce tho processes into commercial practice by urging tho establishment of tho industries whiclijequh'o but small capital, and by offering special inducements in certain Slates where, as in Vera Cry a and Tabasco, the banana plant grows in abundance. In the Technical Division of the Department of Commerce and Industries a machine for peeling and tutting the banana has, been.invented Hidrimf.,.into operation. It is mado entirely' ot wood in ordor to prevent the decomposition of tho fruit, and with the seven knives with which it is provided it can turn out 300 pieces per minute. Tho cost of this machine is about 1000 pesos.
