HIDES AND TALLOW SALES
The fortnightly hido and tallow sales were held yesterday by the various stock auctioneers. I Messrs. DalßCty and Co. report that tl>Dy offered a fair catalogue to a good attendI ante of buyers. Competition was keen, ! particularly for hides suitable for tanners' requirements, and also for calfskins. licavies advanced somewhat on last sale prices, and calfskins wore id. to I'd. dearer. Good lines of tallow sold well, but inferior was neglected. Messrs. Levin and Co. report that, as compared witfy the salo held a fortnight ago, the market was strong and liicher, at an advance of Jd. per lb. all round. Messrs. Murray, Kobcrts, and Co. submitted a catalOßUe of 450 hides. There was very animated competition. In all sound lots prices showed a hardening tendency, but faulty hides were a little easier in price. Calfskins and yearling hides met with a keen market at a high rango of values. The top price of the sale was secured by the firm for a very fine ox hide.-weighing 821b.. which brought tho record price of 15? d. per lb. Superiorconditioned ox hides of 651b. and over brought uptoUid.; medium-weight ox, up to lljd. Cow hides were a trifle firmer in value, making up to 9Jd. for super lots. Messrs. Abraham and Williams. Ltd., report that their catalogue yesterday was not a large one, but all lines were very keenly competed for by a full bench of buyers. Ox hides were about on a par with last sale, with the exception of the lower grades, which were fully one farthing better. Cow hides showed a slight rise for tho lighter classes and heavier were about on a par. Competition for calfskins was very keen, and prices were advanced by 3d. to Id. compared with last sale.
