In an interview ho said that" republicanism was really unpopular in South Africa, even amongst Dutch-speaking South Africans, who were not prepared to risk tho advantages and liberties they enjoyed under tho British; system of government for problematical benefits of republicanism, regarding which they aro sceptical. The outlook was entirely promising. The country was enjoying extraordinary prosperity. The great majority of the people supported the Government policy in assisting tho war to the utmost, and a large and influential section of the Dutch were similarly disposed.
