PRESENTATION OF PRIZES
The annual sraoko concert and presentation of trophies of tho Combined Eilie Clubs was hold last evening in the AY.N.A.Y. Social Hall. .Mr. J. liabe, president of the Wellington Executive, j presided, and Mr. J. 1\ Luke, C.M.G., ' AI.P., presented the prizes. After the loyal toast was honoured, Mr. J. P, Luke proposed the "Navy and Amy and Our Men at the Front," and in doing so he spoke of the excellent service rendered by the riile clubs, and congratulated them on having a combined meeting such as they were then holding. Speaking of defence, he said it was a matter that could not be delegated—it was the duty of everyone. Expressing his own opinion he could not agree with the exemptions granted by the military service boards. He thought it. would have been better had tlie Military Service Act been so framed that every man could lntve been called into camp, \ind those whom it was necessary to exempt could have been given leave <is soldiers. Ho thought New Zealand ivns worth saving, and the responsibility of doing so was laid upon them by their womenfolk and children, lleferrinir to llio Navy, lie said that never in the history of the British 'Navy had such brave deeds been done as were recorded at Zeebrugge and Ostend. He then referred iu glowing terms to the services rendered by our own lads at the front. Mr. M. .1. Grant responded. _Mr. Yv. Judd, acting-chairman of the N.JS. Bilie Club's Executive, proposed the toast of "The Dominion TJiflo Association," to which Major Wallingford responded. Other toasts honoured wero donors of trophies . and prize-winners. Songs and instrumental music wero contributed by several members. The prize-winners were as follow:— Suburbs Defence Rifle Club. J. Smart: Club Championship, second in Newton Cup and Ilickson Aggregate. H. E. Hunt:" "Daily Mail" Cup, third in the second series, fourth in Club Championship. W. J. Spencer: Second in "Daily Mail" Cup, won long-range aggregate, third in the fourth series, fourth in the second series. C. Stewart: Third in the "Daily Mail," first in the short-range aggregate. H. Boon: First in tlie third series, second in tho fourth series, third in the club championship, fourth in the "Daily Mail" Cup. W. G. Fellingham: Second in club championship, fourth in the first series. A. Harris: First in the fourth series. H. Gawith: First in the second series. W. Staples: Second in the first series. A; C. Bollamore: Won Newton Cnp, Morrison Cup, fifth in the club championship, third in the first series. A. Boniface: Second in the third series. W. C. Winchcombo: Second in tho second scyies. B. Dunn: Third in the third series.' J. E. M'Lachlau: Fourth in the fourth series: J. G. Newton: First in the first series. G. 0. Smith: fifth in tho "Daily Mail." Karori Rifle Club. F. The Suburbs Defence Club presented cups and trophies, but tho other clubs distributed certificates.
