ABSENT WITHOUT LEAVE
' A CAMP INCIDENT. ' . -~,' Last week tho members of the -Thirtyeighth Infantry Keinforcements, as reported at the time, made, an orderly, demonstration in Treiitliani Camp in support of their request for extended' leave. They had received the usual 'long.leave" at Easter time, at a unusually early stago of their training, and they considered Unit they should havo another opportun-. ity of visiting their homes. ' The men put their case before Headquarters, and were told that they would receive a reply later. , ■ •' It was announced -.subsequently that long leave could not be granted, owing to the exigencies of'training, but that all tho men of the- draft would receive weekend leave from Saturday last until Monday. About 850 men went on leave on Saturday, and 300 of them did not return on- Monday. Practically all the absentees reached camp on Tuesday and Wednesday, and. the draft-was reported yesterday to be at ! normal strength. This- incident'seems, to havo given rise, to some exaggerated reports. The camp authorities, Jiowever, arc not disposed to take' a serious view of what occurred.
