THE COPPER TRAIL
MONEY COMING IN STEADILY. "The worst of- it is," said one lady connected with tho R«d Cross Copper Trail, "that we can't tel! you exactly how we stand, because it would give us away. Auckland is at it hammer and tongs; so are we. But we cannot say how many yards we have laid down in coppers. All wo can'say is that a grea.t I deal of interest is being manifested in tho trail, and wo hope that in a day or no, when the project becomes thoroughly understood throughout tho district, there will be a veritable boom. We shall need to bring about such a state of things if wo flro goins to beat Auckland, which wo confidently hope to do, fliough it's a long, long trail up to the middlo of tlie Island." ' , As near as. possible,, tho Government Statistician (Mr. Malcolm Fraser) has divided the North Island for the purpose of thisi competition. In tho northern (Auckland) half the population is 341,553 people (including 31,572 Maoris), and in the Wellington (southern)' half 312,228 (including 12.973 Maoris). Auckland's total is slightly in excess of Wellington's, but that is evened to some extent by Auckland's proportion of Maoris to AVellington's. . .
■ The little white pavilion on I.ambton Quay (iu Parliamentary Buildinggrounds) was a scene of animation throughout yesterday, and' there were numerous instances of school children bringing aloiu; thn contents of their money-boxes ;or the fund, whilst several tiny toddlers lavished their nil on the scheme that is to benefit our soldiers at tho front, more perhaps than any of us can quito realise at this distance Tho lied Cross Copper Trail pavilion has been connected . with the telephone (No. 941), and anyone May telephone up liis or her subscription if it is not convenient to call personally with it.
