RABBITS IN THE NORTH
The increase of the rabbit Dest in various parts of tho W.-.ikato is causing some uneasiness, and n special meeting of the Waikato A. and P. Association was held to confer with Messrs. B. J. Bollard, M.P., and ,T. A. Young, M.P. It is estimated that the rabbits between Tirau and Cambridge take- the equivalent in pasture of 85,000 sheep, and the pest is appreciably increasing. It was pointed out that the machinery of the Rabbit Act was not applicable to the local conditions, and Mr. Young outlined necessary amendments to make it workable.
The following resolution was carried:— "That the Waikato A. and I'. Association recommends to the Government that the Rabbit Nuisance Act be amended in the direction of making it applicable to country held by both large and small holders; to that end the association suggests that Parts 111 and IV of ttie Act be amended, and joined up into one workable part, providing for sulisidies on rates levied for general purposes, with powers to borrow for rabbitproof fencing, and the area over which a board may lie created be reduced to 500 acre 6or "more." It was also decided to prepare a remit for submission to the conference of A. and P. Associations.
A deputation was appointed to wait on the Minister of Lands in reference to the matter.
