APPEALS HEARD BY BOARD

NUMBER OF CASES ADJOURNED

The sitting of the Second Wellington Military Service Board was resumed yesterday, Mr. J. W. Poynton, R.M.. presiding. Associated with him wero ■Messrs. F. Curtice and T. Bamber.

Captain J. B. Bealo was tho military representative, ■ The Public Trustee appealed in respect of Frank Douglas Logan (clerk, Christchurch) and Frederick Charles Cooinbo (clerk, Auckland). . , It was represented ■ that the Department had experienced great difficulty in securing competent men to replace those ..who had already gono into camp. The work was very much in arrears now, and tho number of soldiers' estates in tho hands of the Department wtis rapidly increasing, there being now 3000 to administer.

The cases were indefinitely adjourned. The Education Department appealed for tho exemption of Frederick Patiencn (teacher, Matangavau), Harry Hall ;teacher, Tβ Horo Horo Native school), Walter C. Collier (cleric, Island Bay), William M. Clark, (assistant teacher, Fukepoto), Graham Bruce (teacher, Kiioko Native- School), Patrick Harvoy (assistant teacher, Sunmcr), J. K. ITC'suie (Public Servant, Wellington), and G. J. Thompson (Ohoutira Native school). Mr. Caughley (Assistant-Director of Education) pointed out that the Department's stall' had been seriously depleted already, and satisfactory substitutes could not be obtained for the men appealed for. The board adjourned tlie teachers' cases sine die, while tho ca.ws pf the officials were referred to the Public Service Commissioner for consideration, Tho board referred to tho .PnWio Service Commissioner the case of John A. Fraser (Assistant-Land Registrar, Christchurch), who was appealed for by tho Lands Department. The Post and Telegraph Department appealed for exemption for Henry 6. Lakomnn (sub-telegraph ongineer, Dunedin), Percy H. Mason (sub-telegraph engineer, Auckland), and Leslie H. Steele (officer, Radio, Chatham Islands). It was represented that the Department could replace Steele, but special instructions had been received fro.-n tho Navy not to replace wireless men. The others could not be replaced, and men were not allowed to bo drafted from other Departments into the Postal Department. The cases wore adjourned sine die.

Tho chief clerk of the Marine Department (Mr. B. W. Millier) appeared in support'of an appeal on behalf of George H. Brown Dunedin), Arthur W. Page (assistant-li'ghtkeeper, Collingwood), and Frederick N. Evans (third officer of the Hinemoa). Tho cases wore adjourned sine die.

On tho ground of public interest, tho Inspector of Prisons (Mr. C. E. Matthews) appealed for the exemption of tho following ' warders:—Frank E. Joblin (Lyttelton), -Andrew Trimble (Waikeria), 'Arthur C. Davies (Auckland), Thomas Stocker (Waikeria). Frank Matthews and Frank Bemroso (Auckland), Alfred B. Condliff (Wellington), Cyril G. Hall (Paparua). The cases wore all adjourned sine- die.

The Union- Steam Ship Company applied for the exemption of the following: officers, and the cases wove adjourned sine die:—William John King (assisiantmarine superintendent, Dunedin), John Bruce (chief officer), Charles C. Bullock (master tug Terawhiti), William .D. Cameron (captain), Joseph Henry Claydon (first officer), Richard Thomas Crowe fsecond officer), H. Drydcn (captain), Ernest Gillin (third officer), James A. Hugham (chief officer), (i. P. Wilson (offcer), E. B. Campbell (fourth engineer), Albert C. Coad (chief engineer), Leslie (.'. Davie3 (second engineer). G. R. .Falla (chief engineer), A. Inveraiity (second' enrineer), J. E. Loraine (second engineer), K A. Lush (third engineer) K. J. Menliplay (third engineer), D. W. Palmer I third engineer), T. B. Kutter (secoud engineer), John Stewart (third engineer), 'A. K. Wickes (chief engineer), P. D. C. iWilliams (fifth engineer), A Young (uhief engineer), W. Scott (wharfinger, LyLiel<on), and W. H. Scantlebury (apprentice cadet). . On the application , of Mr.; W. ■-.-T. Young, seoretary of the Seamen's Union, ■the cases of the. following seamen were itdjourned sine dio: —Adam Contts, Percy IV Morris, George B. Gable, William H. Jessup, Patrick Donovan, Henrv N. Whaler, Frederick Boyd, Martin AV. Milner, Wilfrid. Mason, Sydney M. LilchSeld, Alfred E. Johnson Robert E. Layrourn, Joseph W. Byrne, Bertram Smith, Walter T. Brookd, William Shirley, Dave 'Appelton, 'William' T. Swain, and Ed,ward Harwood. The case 3 of the following slautthlernien were adjourned sine die:—Thomas M. Aldridge, David Struthors (Hastings), Joseph Saumlers (Oamaru), John G. Wbitworth (Whakatanc), and .Charles J. Keenan (Hastings). The New Zealand Farmers' Co-opera-tive Bacon Company appealed for Charles Drewry, refrigerating engineer, Hamilton, and James Graham, refriep.rnting engineer, Franklon Junction. The i'iisps were adjourned sine die. The reserved rose of James Cassey, Trarehouseman (o Mcssr.-;. H. Hannah and Co., Ltd., was dismissed, leavo being recommended until August U .
