The following account of a ntcamer'B adventure with a floating mine has been roported in Sydney for aoino days, says an Australian paper. This etcamcr, whilo on a voyage between Now Zealand and Sidney, with a cargo of limber, sighted a black object on April 25. In view of the finding of mines off the New South Wales coast, suspicion was aroused, and it wan decided to make a closer inspection. The vessel's courso was altered accordingly, and when close enough the- spherical hody and protruding horn* of a mlno were plainly seen. Tho officers of the steamer ■were puzzled to knovr what to do. If the} abandoned tho mine, thero was a chance of anbthor vesuel flniing ltr-with disastrous consequences- before the locality could bo reported to tho authorities. Soon a bold plan of action was decided upon.

With the greatest, caution the steamer was 'manoeuvred towards tho deadly engine till it was a few fathoms to leowird. A howline was made in a. lino, and the bight— with much accuracy, and a- ecrtuin amount, of luck—was thrown round tho mine which wan dropped astorn. A riflo and ammunition was produced, and si marksman proceeded 10 Bhoot at the tow, with tho object or hitting ono of tho horns and exploding it. Owing to there beiug a slight Bea. running at the time, the shooting was unsuccessful, though tho body of tho mine, It is thought, was hit once or twice. At length ammunition for the rifle cave out, and, as another steamer was in the oiling, signal were made, asking for ammunition, and explaining the situation. The vtßSei thus appealed to, aleo a New Zealand trader, evidently <tid not comprehend tho message, for, signalling a compliment in reply, she hold her course, and' was soon hull down. As darkness came'on. the mine, which was towing badly through the choppy and rapidly rising oea, brokvi adrift, and disappeared attorn. MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. M'Donald, who has been on the Mapourika while Captain Scwell has b'en on holiday leave, will remain in command of the vessel, mid Captain Scwell will take over the - Komftta, relieving Captain J. Quick progress is beinr made in overhauling and niaking alterations to the Aorore. On Tuesday, she will go on the slip for cleaning, painting, etc., remainin.? there several days.

The Wootton will remain at Lyttelton for about a week while undergoing overhaul. The auxiliary schooner Gisborue was taken down to Port Chalmers on Tuesday for a trial run to test the 45 h.p. Globe engine which was installed while the vessel was being altered for the southern trade. Both tide and wind were against her on the trip down, hut tho parage from Port to Dunedin was made in 1 hour 5 minutes. The schooner was to have been dispatched on Wcdnesdav for Wellington under Qaptain D. Hanning. The New Plymouth Harbour Board has notified the' Marine Department that boulders arc" now being deposited from the dredge on the line of breakwater for a distance of about 1$ cables from breakwater end. Masters of vessels are warned to keep at least two cables off the end of breakwater when making or leaving port. The chimney of the. Moturon, {reeling works and that of tho oil refinery works In line bearing 193deg. (S. 3deg. E. mag.) lead two cables oft the breakwater end. Tho annual roport of tho Northern Steamship Company, Ltd. stated that the net profit oh the working aocount for the year ending March 31, after makinß provision for insurance, depreciation, and hoiler and repairs accounts, was £11,309. The balance brought forward from April 1, 1917, after deducting the dividend, wan £2611, while- transfer fees amonnted to £12, making a, total of £13,933. The directors recommended that this sum be appropriated ,as follows :-Payment of a dividend at the rate of 7 per centum per annum (half of which was paid to shareholders in November, 1917). totalling £11,298, and leaving a, balance of £2634 to be carricd forward.
