Poynton, S.M., pre sidod, and associated with him wero Messrs. F. Curtice and T. Bamber. Captaui J. B. Bealo was the military representative. ' - ti J 'V ln8 P fotor of Mental Hospitals (Dr. •Hay) appealed for exemption for 17 attendants at mental hospitals. Dr. Hay . stated that half tho male staff of tho mental hospitals had gono to the war. Kinateen had been killed or died of ■wounds, and sixteen had returned. The appeals wero referred to tho Public Service Commissioner for consideration. Tho Government Analyst appealed for -Robert L. Androw, analyst in the Health Department. It was stated that Andrew was engaged in duties connected with tho analysing of food for camps, transports, ■ etc. Ha was hold to 1m essential, and there would be difficulty in replacing _ him. The board decided to refer the ease to the Public Servico Commissioner. An appeal was made by Mr. C. It. C. Eobieson, secretary of the State Firo Office,, for the exemption of Harold C. .Rogers, manager of tho St. Albans branch of the State Firo Office. The cas* was referred to the Public Service Commissioner for consideration. > The Dyeing Business. Messrs. Barber and Co., for whom Mr, M. F. Luckie appeared, appealed for the exemption of James. Johnstone, a dyer in their employ. Mr. Luckie pointed out that Johnstone was tho only remaining dyer in the eraploy of the firm, and all efforts to ro- - place him ■ had been unsuccessful. Mr. l • Luckie contended that the business of dyeing second-hand clothes should have hem placed in-a higher category by the ' National Efficiency Board than had actually been the case, as it tended in the direction of economy. Alfred Barber, a menibor. of the firm of Barber and Co., said that 95 per ceut. of the work done by Johnstone was dyeing of socond-hand apparel. Johnstone iwasa thoroughly qualified man. Experience had. shown that good all-round men ■were difficult to obtain-in New Zealand, as dyers brought out from Home were mostly specialists in one branch of the Business only. The brard adjourned the case for further inquiry.
Milk in the City, , George R. Kells, for whom' Mr. M. Crombie appeared, stated that he was a dairy farmer at Taita, and milked Hi cows. 1 Ho held his farm on,lease. He' did not mind going to' the front if, abiwlately needed, but it was for financial reasons that he desired to remain in New Zealand. Evidence was given by Mr. Henry Ward, secretary of the Dairy Farmers' 'Association, to the effect that an acute toilk shortage existed in Wellington, and great difficulty was experienced in obtaining supplies,for the city. . '-'If this and similar cases arc exempted;" remarked the chairman, "it will only be on condition that the • appellants supply tho city of Wellington with Milk and not any factory." % The case was adjourned for further inquiry uutil tho nest sitting of the board.
Depletion'of School Teachers. Appeals on behalf of Maurice J. O'Connor, school teacher, Marlborough, and "William E. ( Corporal James Carter, returned soldier, of Petone; asked for threo months' leave for family affairs, no had left for the front with the Main Body, and/since his return iu March l had been married. .Itoeently his father broke a collarbopo »nd appellant desired to render him as--in connection with his farm. iTho board acceded to the request. Miscellaneous Cases. At the instigation of the. Gear Meat Company, the case of .Frederick W. Bokeen, pelt flesher, was adjourned untiltho first meeting of tho board in September. It was pointed oub that the company ;bad'experienced difficulty in trying to obtain the services of a man to fill Bokeen's position. ft. Y. Walls and Co. appealed for the 'exemption of Walter H. Liidfor'd, nu armature winder in their omplov. Mr. G. Watson appeared 'for the appellant firm.' Mr. Walls stated that the whole of LndfordV time was ongaged in highly specialised .work for freezing companies' and transports. The case, was adjourned till the first sitting of tho board in September. ■ The father of Arthur E. Barker, audit bookkeeper, appealed for his exemption on the ground that ho was the only surviving son. His other 6on had < died nf wounds'in Palestine. The. appeal was allowed, the case being adjourned sine .die. Frederick Anderson, mill hand, of Featherston, was granted exemption (fh the appeal of the Director of Recruiting, on the ground that he was not a reservist. It was stated- that the man's father was a Swede and his mother a German, nnd that tho man himself was born:in Swedon. Peter Blaikie, telegraphist, was grant-

Brown, electrical engineer, in the employ of Messrs. Turnbull and Jones, Auckland, was granted exemption as proof was forthcoming that he was Ovsr age.
Albert Daniel, engineer, Wellington South, was granted leave until this last draft in August on the ground that- his Wifo was in delicate health. Tho case of Labia W. Jacobson, motorman, iierhampore, who applied for leave os his wifo was ill, was adjourned until tho first sitting in September. Christopher Beever, carpenter, of Island Bay, who was represented by Mr. P. J. O'Regan, appealed on tho ground of undue hardship. Appellaut was a widower with ono child aged five years, and lived with his deceased' wife's parents, who were up in years and not in the best of health. Appellant was recommended for leave until August U. On tho application of the Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., .Frederick : H. Bass, a. confidential clerk, was recommended for leave until tho first draft goes into camp in October. The board adjourned until 10 a.m. today.
