SOLDIERS AND SICK PAY

PEiENDLY SOCIETIES' LIABILITY. By .Telegraph-Press Association. Dunedin, May 30. The; Magistrate (Mr. Bartholomew) gave judgment to-day in the case of a returned soldier against the Ivanhoe Lodge of Druids, the point at issue being whether an invalid, soldier, prior to discharge from the forces, is entitled to receive sick pay from a friendly society of which he is a financial member, on the strength of a medical certificate that he is unable to follow his occupation.. Tho Magistrate held that the sole question was whether the member was able to follow any occupation. Plaintiff's duties and obligations were set out in the Expeditionary Forces Act, and his occupation, therefore, was to serve as a member of the forces .until his discharge. The lodge's prescribed form of medical certificato provided that a member must bo unable to follow any occupation. Judgment was given for defendant.
