ENEMY CROSSES THE VESLE . ' FLANDERS AMERICAN EXPLOIT NEAR To-da/s dispatches from the Western front ehow that the German offensive is developing, but that the exact point of his major thrust is not yet clear is generally admitted. The enemy has not yet committed his main reserve sufficiently to disclose his hand, but according to a United Service message his attacks in the Champagne , region have developed into a great offensive. The Vesle lino has been crossed at several points, notably at Bazoclca and Fismes. Successful counter-attacks by the British, in Handera have re-established the line east of Dickebnsch Lake. Four German divisions lost heavily during the fighting. On the Montdidier sector, the Americans, supported by tanks, carried tho enemy's lines on a-front of over a mile. The German pressure behind the V«sle front is said to fee v.ery severe, but according to the French official report the counter-attacks have arrested the German advance. The Italian offensive operations continued to develop successfully. To-day's report records another advance, resulting .in a further capture of prisoners and booty. A lato message from Sydney, received at 0.50 a.m., states: "No. war sews is available."
