LOWER HUTT BOROUGH
The ordinary meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council was held last evening, tho Mayor (Mr. E. P. Eishworth) presided, .and there were present Councillors A. Hobbs, J. M'Dougall, AV. Crittou, AV. G. Meldruiu, S. G. Clendon, .'!. Brasell, AV. Walton, A. AVest, AV. Kerr. .Mr. IF. Eowell, manager of the King George Theatre, wrote asking for a modification of certain conditions upon which n license for the theatre will be granted. The council, at its lust meeting, fixed the width of the aisles at 5 feet, and the manager wanted it reduced to i feet, and to abolish the attendance of a fireman, except on Saturday. Several proposals wero submitted for modification, but after come discussion the council decided to insist upon the original conditions laid down. The Borough Solicitor wrote furnishing a further opinion respecting the council's power in connection with the ga;i agreement. The Mayor stated that tho agreement was worth considering very carefully, but it was necessary to obtain further information before the matter could be thoroughly -discussed. _ It was decided to hold over consideration until further particulars, as indicated by the Mayor, has been obtained. A letter was received from the UnderSecretary, Department of Internal Affairs, Advising that it was not proposed to mako any charge for Inspector Hugo's .'ervieea in com.ection with the inspection of the King George Theatre. It was ilecidod to thank the Department for the concession.
Tho plan and specifications for tho subdivision of the H. P. Hineffy estate submitted by the Public Trust OlScs was approved ou condition that tho Borough Engineer's 'rcquiremcuits wero curried out.
The report of Ihe Borough Engineer, which dealt briefly with; the work done during the past fortnight:, was adopted. A report wis submitted by th'o Borough Inspector showing the quantity of benzine stored by different persons in the borough, and the storage Accommodation provided by each. Tho 'I'owu Clerk stilted that many of people wero not complying with the by-laws. It was decided to call the attention of the offenders to the. by-law, and that fourteen days be allowed before any legal action is token. The Library Committee was authorised to consider a. scheme.of lending suitable books lo the children in the higher standards of tho State Schools. It was decided to write tho Minister of Justice urging that the sum of .CI3OO placed on the estimates for a new pulico station bo expended..
