According to correspondents of 'LAstronomie," sound waves can sometimes )9 actually seim against the sky near tna front when heavy 'gunfire is going on. The appearance takes the form of rapici-ly-moving waves of light and shade, ami on one occasion this phenomenon was witnessed by all the members ot a buttery of artillery. TJio waves yary in size, bein" larger for heavy artillery and smaller for lighter gun's. In another, instance sound waves seen by a .French cure took the form of circular arc's having a very largo radius, the appearance being similar to that caused upon the surface of water when a stone or other object w Hun- into it. A third observer describes the appearance on another occasion as resembling tho spokes of an enormoua wheel.
In a familiar slorv a man on trial for pocket-picking asked the judge, "Now, judge, supposing you picked my pocket—'' "Hut that't nol a suppus. able case."
